India remains primary provider of aid to Maldives, says former FM
Former Maldivian Foreign Minister and former UN General Assembly President Abdulla Shahid has stated that India is the only nation providing substantial assistance to the Maldives. He noted that support from the rest of the international community has been negligible during times of need.
Shahid criticized the current administration under President Mohamed Muizzu, alleging that the government has attempted to play China and India against each other. He remarked that while members of the current administration previously campaigned on ‘India Out’ platforms, they have since sought financial assistance from New Delhi.
Furthermore, Shahid argued that the Maldives' inconsistent foreign policy and frequent shifts driven by short-term political interests have eroded international trust. He also noted that President Muizzu’s foreign visits and government-organized investment forums have failed to produce tangible results or attract foreign investors.
