India removes CGHS geographical restrictions for government employees

The Ministry of Health & Family Welfare has issued an Office Memorandum removing geographical restrictions for Central Government employees seeking to access the Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS).

Previously, eligibility was subject to geographical conditions, such as residing within a 5 km radius of a CGHS Wellness Centre. The new policy eliminates these criteria to address difficulties faced by employees posted in cities not covered by the scheme or outside prescribed coverage areas.

Serving employees currently covered under the CS(MA) Rules, 1944, who reside outside CGHS areas, may exercise a one-time option to become CGHS beneficiaries. This option is final and binding once exercised and applies to all eligible dependents. Employees already residing within CGHS-covered district headquarters will remain under the scheme and cannot opt out in favor of CS(MA) Rules, 1944.
