India renewable energy capacity sees record solar and wind growth

India is experiencing significant growth in its renewable energy sectors, specifically in solar and wind power. In the first half of 2026, the country added a record 27 GW of solar PV, a 49% year-on-year increase. Cumulative solar capacity reached 164.8 GW by the end of June 2026, with utility-scale projects making up 83% of the total. Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Maharashtra were the primary drivers of large-scale solar installations.

In the wind sector, FY2025-26 saw 6.1 GW of new capacity, the highest annual addition in the sector’s history, bringing cumulative installed capacity to 55 GW as of March 2026. To reach a target of 100 GW by 2030, the Indian Wind Turbine Manufacturers Association (IWTMA) notes that India must achieve annual installations of approximately 10 GW.

The IWTMA identifies several state-level bottlenecks that could hinder these targets, including issues with land acquisition, Right of Way, transmission connectivity, and regulatory approval processes. Addressing these execution challenges and aligning state-level regulations is considered essential to maintaining investor confidence and meeting long-term energy goals.
