India renewable energy sector sees surge in solar capacity and storage

India's renewable energy sector is seeing significant growth, highlighted by a 131% year-over-year surge in rooftop solar additions during the first half of 2026. According to Mercom India Research, the country added 6.6 GW of rooftop solar capacity in 1H 2026, compared to 2.8 GW in the same period the previous year.

Juniper Green Energy reported its highest-ever quarterly renewable energy commissioning in Q1 FY27, adding 601 MWp of capacity, consisting of 458 MWp of solar and 143 MW of wind. The company's operational capacity reached 2,575 MWp following recent wind capacity additions. Juniper Green is also expanding its battery energy storage systems (BESS), targeting 4,500 MWh by June 2027 and 10,000 MWh by March 2028.

Other regional developments include Telangana's shift toward solar-plus-storage solutions and the Kerala State Electricity Regulatory Commission proposing a new framework for energy storage systems for the 2028–2032 period. Additionally, ACME Solar Holdings secured approximately $164.57 million in funding to support its operations.
