India reports 259 nationals recruited into Russian armed forces

The Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) reported on Wednesday that 259 Indian nationals are believed to have been recruited into the Russian armed forces since the beginning of the Russia-Ukraine war. Through government intervention, 139 of these individuals have been discharged, while 69 remain in service. The MEA is currently seeking information from Russian authorities regarding the status of those still serving.

Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal described the situation as a ‘matter of deep concern,’ noting that reports of Indians joining the Russian military continue to emerge despite repeated government warnings. The Indian government has issued several advisories over the last two years, warning citizens that such offers are ‘fraught with grave danger to life’ and could lead to deployment on the frontlines of the conflict in Ukraine.

Authorities also noted that some individuals have reportedly surrendered their Indian passports to obtain Russian citizenship for financial incentives before joining the military. The government has urged citizens to avoid these offers, which are often presented under the guise of employment, to prevent being trapped in the conflict.
