India reports fatal tiger and elephant attacks
Multiple fatal animal attacks have been reported in India. In Maharashtra state, a tiger killed two farmers, Nana Kambadi and Premila Mahadole, in separate incidents occurring within 24 hours of each other. Officials suspect the same tiger was responsible for both deaths. This brings the death toll from human-animal conflicts in this specific part of Maharashtra to 35 in 2026.
In Jharkhand and Odisha regions, elephant attacks have also claimed lives. In Jharkhand, a man named Nicholas Topno was killed by an elephant while attempting to drive a herd of 23 elephants away from a village. In the Dhenkanal forest division, two farmers, Sridhar Dehury and Sanjay Bhoi, were killed by a tusker while inspecting paddy fields at night. Forest officials have warned residents to avoid approaching elephant herds, particularly during harvest seasons when animals frequently enter human habitations to feed on crops.
