India responds to US envoy's claims regarding Modi-Trump meeting

US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor has revealed that the Indian government requested a no-question policy during a June 17 meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Donald Trump at the G7 summit in France. According to Gor, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) requested that media be present but that a full press conference with questions be avoided. While Trump reportedly initially agreed to the request, he ultimately invited journalists to participate, resulting in a 45-minute press conference.

Indian government sources responded to Gor’s remarks by stating that discussing arrangements for public appearances is “normal practice ahead of any VVIP visit” and that the communication reflected standard protocol.

The meeting also addressed critical bilateral issues, including trade negotiations and security concerns in the Strait of Hormuz. Prime Minister Modi reportedly raised the safety of Indian seafarers following an incident in which three Indian mariners were killed during a US Navy attack on a commercial vessel. Trump indicated that the US would support India in the event of an attack and noted that the two nations are close to a trade deal.
