India's telecom regulator to review net neutrality rules for 5G slicing
The Indian government is reviewing the 2018 net‑neutrality framework to accommodate 5G network‑slicing. The proposed changes would let telecom operators offer differentiated connectivity and speeds for specialised services such as cloud gaming, healthcare, autonomous vehicles and smart factories, while keeping the internet open for ordinary use.
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has been asked to suggest amendments or clarifications, and safeguards are planned to prevent a “walled‑garden” approach or paid preferential treatment. Reliance Jio intends to use 5G slicing to boost capacity and coverage in dense urban areas, and Bharti Airtel has already launched a slicing‑based service for select postpaid customers, which is under examination by the Department of Telecommunications and TRAI.
The review follows similar examinations in the European Union, while the United States has cancelled its federal net‑neutrality rules. India’s existing rules, introduced in 2018, currently prohibit any preferential treatment of internet traffic.
