India sees sharp rise in agricultural loans and direct tax revenues

The Indian government reported that agricultural sector financing has surged four‑fold over the past 11 years, reaching about ₹32.5 lakh crore in the 2025‑26 fiscal year, up from ₹8 lakh crore in 2014‑15. The growth reflects an average annual increase of around 13 percent, supported by refinancing from NABARD and a 35 percent expansion of rural bank branches to 56,193 by July 2025. Rural households are increasingly accessing formal credit, with 51 percent borrowing from formal sources and 77.2 percent noting higher consumption.

In the same period, total direct tax collection rose 16.11 percent year‑on‑year to ₹7.74 lakh crore. Net direct tax, after refunds, reached ₹6.51 lakh crore, while corporate tax collection rose to ₹2.40 lakh crore and non‑corporate tax to ₹3.85 lakh crore. Refunds increased 14.57 percent to ₹1.22 lakh crore. Securities Transaction Tax collected ₹26,428.96 crore, up from ₹17,875.88 crore a year earlier. These figures underscore strong domestic economic momentum and expanding fiscal capacity.
