India sees successful recoveries of extremely premature newborns with government medical support

A baby born at 25 weeks and weighing 860 g in Ratlam, Madhya Pradesh, was admitted to the district hospital's Special Newborn Care Unit. After 15 days of continuous positive airway pressure, oxygen therapy, a blood transfusion and kangaroo‑mother care, the infant gained weight to 1.4 kg and was discharged after nearly two months.

In Nawanshahr, Punjab, a 27‑week, 700‑g baby received 50 days of specialised NICU care at an empanelled private hospital. The treatment, costing about ₹3 lakh, was provided entirely cashless under the state’s Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojana scheme, which covers high‑risk neonatal cases. Both cases highlight the effectiveness of government‑supported neonatal services in saving lives of extremely premature infants.
