India sees surge in college ragging complaints, Uttar Pradesh tops with 135 cases
The Ministry of State for Education reported that 755 ragging complaints were logged in Indian higher‑education institutions up to 22 July 2026. Uttar Pradesh recorded the highest number with 135 cases, followed by West Bengal (75), Madhya Pradesh (63), Maharashtra (53) and Bihar (50). Other states with notable counts include Rajasthan (44), Karnataka (41), Odisha (36) and Delhi (27).
The University Grants Commission (UGC) issued show‑cause notices to 107 institutions—including 18 medical colleges—in 2025 for failing to meet the Anti‑Ragging Regulations of 2009. The UGC’s corrective approach includes a 24×7 national helpline, mandatory anti‑ragging undertakings by students and parents, workshops, and display of anti‑ragging posters. A 2016 amendment broadened the definition of ragging and heightened awareness, which the ministry says has led to increased reporting.
Data submitted in the Lok Sabha shows a steady rise in complaints since 2022: 655 in 2022, 962 in 2023, 1,084 in 2024 and 1,369 in 2025, indicating growing awareness and reporting of the issue.
