India sees two juvenile observation home escapes, one involving murder
On July 14, 2026, twelve inmates escaped from the Government Observation Home near Chengalpattu, Tamil Nadu, after assaulting two teachers and a warden, stealing their phones and gate keys and fleeing to rob motorists on a nearby road. Police recovered one escapee in Chennai and intensified security at the facility.
A day earlier, in Bilaspur district, Chhattisgarh, four inmates from a government‑run observation home strangled watchman Narendra Kumar Khande before breaking out. Senior Superintendent of Police Rajnesh Singh said the motive appeared to be obtaining gate keys. Authorities launched a search operation, deploying forensic teams and a dog squad to locate the fugitives.
Both incidents highlight security lapses at juvenile observation homes overseen by India's Social Welfare and Juvenile Justice authorities, prompting investigations and calls for tighter controls.
