India Sends High-Level Delegation to Iran for Khamenei Funeral

India’s Governor of Bihar, Lieutenant General (Retired) Syed Ata Hasnain, and Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita attended the funeral ceremonies for Iran’s late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei in Tehran. Khamenei was killed on 28 February in a joint US‑Israel attack, prompting the appointment of his son Mojtaba Khamenei as the new Supreme Leader in March. The Indian delegation said the high‑level representation underscored the strong civilizational ties and the potential for political and economic cooperation between the two countries. Earlier, on 5 March, India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri signed the condolence book at the Iranian embassy in New Delhi. The funeral schedule includes services at Imam Khomeini’s Mosalla on 4‑5 July, processions on 6 July in Tehran, 7 July in Qom, and a final ceremony on 9 July in Mashhad, followed by burial at the Imam Reza shrine.
