India set to become second-largest global ammonia capacity builder by 2030

India is projected to contribute more than 15% of the worldwide ammonia capacity additions expected by 2030, positioning it as the second‑largest source after the United States, according to a GlobalData forecast. The expansion is driven by the need to secure fertilizer supplies for food security, lessen dependence on imports and meet the country's net‑zero emissions targets, including the push for green ammonia.

Six new projects are slated to come online before the end of the decade. The largest is the Reliance Industries Jamnagar Ammonia Plant, to be operated by Reliance O2C Ltd with 100% ownership by Reliance Industries Ltd, expected to start in 2030. Other key developments include the Madras Fertilizers Manali Ammonia Plant 2 in Tamil Nadu (2030), Talcher Fertilizers’ Talcher Ammonia Plant (2027) and Matix Fertilisers & Chemicals’ Panagarh Ammonia Plant 2 (2029). Apart from fertilizer demand, the new capacity will also serve industrial uses such as water treatment, textile processing and refrigeration.
