India set to receive record RBI dividend of about ₹3 trillion amid Middle East crisis

The Reserve Bank of India is expected to approve a record dividend for the central government in the 2026‑27 fiscal year, potentially amounting to roughly ₹3.16 lakh crore (about ₹3 trillion). This follows the previous year’s dividend of ₹2.69 lakh crore, a 27 % rise over the prior payout. The large transfer will bolster non‑tax revenue at a time when the Indian treasury faces heightened fiscal strain from the ongoing Iran‑United States conflict and related oil‑price pressures.

The surge in dividend is underpinned by strong earnings from public‑sector banks, which posted a collective operating profit of ₹3.21 lakh crore and a net profit of ₹1.98 lakh crore, marking the fourth consecutive year of profitability. The RBI board meeting scheduled for May will determine the final dividend amount, which will be recorded as non‑tax revenue.

Government budget documents project that, together with dividends from other financial institutions, the total non‑tax revenue from such transfers could reach ₹3.16 lakh crore in FY27, a rise of about 3.75 % over the current year.
