India shifts toward selective trade integration and strategic autonomy

India is adopting a nuanced trade diplomacy strategy characterized by selective integration. Rather than pursuing conventional free trade, the nation is focusing on agreements that combine market access and services with protections for sensitive domestic sectors. Recent initiatives include the India–UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement, which entered into force in July 2026, as well as ongoing negotiations and frameworks involving the European Union, New Zealand, Oman, and the United States.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has emphasized the need for strategic autonomy regarding critical inputs to mitigate global economic uncertainty. This push for self-reliance is driven by challenges in securing energy and critical minerals essential for the semiconductor, automobile, and electronics industries. These efforts are complicated by geopolitical tensions, including US policies regarding oil purchases and Chinese restrictions on critical mineral exports and skilled labor access. The goal is to build domestic manufacturing and defense capabilities to reduce vulnerability without resorting to total economic isolation.
