India, Slovakia boost ties as Modi makes historic visit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Bratislava, marking the first visit by an Indian prime minister to Slovakia since the country’s independence in 1993. During the trip the two leaders elevated bilateral relations to a Comprehensive Partnership and signed 11 agreements covering areas such as migration, digital technology, defence and energy. A Letter of Intent was also signed to expand cooperation between the two defence industries, and both sides agreed to work on implementing the India‑European Union free‑trade agreement. “We have decided to elevate our relations to the status of a Comprehensive Partnership. This symbolises our shared beliefs, shared priorities, and shared future,” Modi said.

The visit underscores India’s drive to deepen economic engagement with Europe. Discussions focused on advanced manufacturing, automotive production, rail infrastructure, innovation and emerging technologies, with Slovakia positioned as a gateway for Indian firms to access European markets and supply chains. Officials expect the agreements to accelerate trade, attract investment and strengthen supply‑chain resilience between the two countries.
