India solar capacity hits record 27 GW in first half of 2026

India's solar energy sector saw significant activity in the first half of 2026, with the country adding a record 27 GW of solar capacity. This represents a 49% increase compared to the 18 GW added during the same period in 2025. According to Mercom India Research, solar power accounted for 76% of the total 36 GW of new power capacity installed during the first half of the year.

Leading states for utility-scale installations in the second quarter included Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Maharashtra. Despite the record growth, industry experts noted potential bottlenecks, including limited transmission availability, domestic cell shortages, and the impact of policy changes such as the ALMM List-II implementation.

In corporate news, Uttar Pradesh-based Solarworld Energy Solutions reported a 121% year-over-year revenue increase for Q1 FY 2027, reaching ₹1.78 billion. However, the company's profit after tax for the quarter fell by 26.4% to ₹95 million.
