India solar capacity reaches 171 GW amid shifting market dynamics

India’s solar energy sector is undergoing a significant transition from large-scale ground-mounted solar parks toward more diversified applications. As of September 30, 2026, the country’s cumulative solar photovoltaic capacity reached 171.05 GW. This total includes 125.65 GW from ground-mounted projects, 33.41 GW from grid-connected rooftop installations, 5.36 GW from hybrid projects, and 6.63 GW from off-grid applications.

Growth is being driven by increased demand in residential, commercial, and industrial sectors, alongside government initiatives like the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana. This program has supported the deployment of rooftop systems to millions of households. The industry is also seeing a shift toward integrated solutions involving battery energy storage systems (BESS) to ensure grid stability as the share of renewables increases.

On the manufacturing front, India is working to strengthen its domestic ecosystem. The Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM) for solar PV modules has exceeded 230 GW of capacity. While the sector benefits from falling costs of solar modules and batteries, experts note that further acceleration requires faster land clearances, improved transmission infrastructure, and stable regulatory frameworks for energy storage.
