India solar schemes reach 51 lakh households amid logistics challenges

India's government has reported significant progress in its decentralized solar energy initiatives. Under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, over 51.27 lakh households have benefited as of August 10, 2026. Additionally, the PM-KUSUM scheme has solarized approximately 28.39 lakh irrigation pumps as of July 31.

Since 2023-24, the country has added 1,14,502 MW of renewable energy capacity, including over 68,765 MW of ground-mounted solar and 21,864 MW of rooftop solar. Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Maharashtra have emerged as the top-performing states in renewable energy capacity addition.

Despite high demand, industry experts and a Parliamentary Standing Committee have identified logistical bottlenecks as a primary challenge to scaling installations. While the government aims to reach one crore solarized households by March 2027, the industry notes that installer capacity is often limited by supply chain efficiency—specifically the ability to deliver complete, undamaged, and correctly configured systems to addresses on schedule.
