India strengthens ties with Israel amid Gaza conflict
India’s diplomatic and economic relationship with Israel has strengthened significantly under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, a shift that has accelerated during the ongoing conflict in Gaza. While several nations, including the United Kingdom, France, Canada, and Norway, have banned the entry of Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, India welcomed him with a multi-city tour in September 2025.
During his visit, Smotrich signed a trade deal in New Delhi, visited the Mumbai stock exchange, and toured an investment hub in Gujarat. This warming of ties comes as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu faces increasing international isolation and potential legal challenges from the International Criminal Court. Analysts suggest that while India was historically a staunch supporter of Palestine, the current administration has moved toward a closer embrace of Israel, characterized by high-level visits and expanded business cooperation.
