India Supreme Court criticizes government over acid sale ban failure
The Supreme Court of India has expressed serious concern regarding the continued availability of acid in markets despite existing bans and guidelines. A bench comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi, and Justice V. Mohana observed that the persistence of acid attacks indicates a failure in current policies and enforcement.
The court noted that merely issuing circulars to states is insufficient and that the Central government must share responsibility for ensuring compliance within the country's federal structure. The bench questioned the accountability of enforcement agencies and noted that loopholes allow acid to remain freely accessible.
The Centre has been directed to file a comprehensive affidavit within four weeks. This report must include state-wise data on licensed vendors, inspections, FIRs registered for illegal sales, and actions taken against e-commerce platforms. Additionally, the court requested data on compensation disbursed to survivors, medical treatment provided under Section 357C, and measures for the education and employment of victims.
