India surpasses 300 GW in non-fossil fuel energy capacity
India's non-fossil fuel-based energy capacity has surpassed 300 GW as of July 31, 2026, according to the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy. This figure represents approximately 54% of the country's total installed energy capacity of 552 GW.
Solar energy has been the primary driver of this growth, increasing from 2.8 GW in 2014 to approximately 165 GW. Wind energy has also seen significant expansion, rising from 21 GW in 2014 to over 58 GW. During the 2025-26 period, a record 55.29 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity was installed, led by 44.6 GW of solar and 6 GW of wind power.
India has already achieved 60% of its target to reach 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030. To support this expansion and ensure supply chain self-reliance, the government implemented the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, which helped increase registered solar PV module capacity from 2.3 GW in 2014 to over 200 GW. Additionally, the National Green Hydrogen Mission is being implemented to promote industrial decarbonization.
