India targets $100 billion media and entertainment industry growth
At the CII Big Picture Summit in Mumbai, industry leaders and government officials outlined a roadmap to transform India’s media and entertainment (M&E) sector into a $100 billion industry by the early 2030s.
Information and Broadcasting Secretary Chanchal Kumar emphasized the need for India to move beyond being a consumer of global content to becoming a creator of original intellectual property (IP) capable of international competition. This vision aligns with the “Create In India, Create For The World” initiative. Key support mechanisms mentioned include the WAVES 2025 vision, the Indian Institute of Creative Technologies, and the India Cine Hub.
Gaurav Banerjee, CEO of Sony Pictures Networks India, argued that the industry requires a fundamental rewrite of its business models. He noted that massive audience reach alone is insufficient for sustainability and that companies must focus on creating measurable value for audiences, advertisers, and investors. Banerjee also proposed a more structured talent development system, similar to the Indian Premier League’s scouting model, to systematically discover and train creative storytellers.
