India targets 500 GW clean energy capacity by 2030

India requires approximately $220 billion in investment between 2027 and 2030 to reach its target of 500 GW of non-fossil fuel power capacity. According to Santosh Kumar Sarangi, Secretary at the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, the funding will support solar, wind, battery storage, transmission, and green hydrogen sectors.

Industry group ASSOCHAM reports that India has already achieved over 54 percent of its non-fossil power capacity, reaching 300.5 GW in July 2026. While the country is ahead of its 2030 timeline for capacity percentage, industry leaders emphasize that achieving full climate goals may require up to $2.5 trillion in total investment to ensure grid stability and commercial viability.

Recent policy developments in Q3 2026 focus on grid stability and storage integration. The Tamil Nadu government has introduced a policy mandating battery storage for new solar and wind-solar hybrid projects of 1 MW and above. Additionally, the Solar Energy Corporation of India has invited bids for large-scale battery energy storage projects in Rajasthan and Gujarat.
