India targets drug-free status by 2029 through network-centric enforcement

At the 3rd National Conference of Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) heads in New Delhi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced a national target to achieve a “Drug-Free India” by December 31, 2029.

Shah outlined a strategic shift from individual drug seizures to dismantling entire trafficking networks. The proposed strategy involves classifying districts into three categories: manufacturing or entry points, transportation corridors, and consumption hubs. To support this, the government plans to deploy “Nashamukt Mitras” to 10 lakh educational institutions to lead awareness campaigns.

Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) Director General Anurag Garg urged states and Union Territories to develop individual three-year roadmaps aligned with the National Vision Document on Narcotics Control (2026-2029). Garg emphasized moving toward a “network-centric approach” to better detect and destroy transnational and interstate trafficking syndicates through improved intelligence sharing.

Additionally, the NCB is proposing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Railway Protection Force (RPF) to enhance capacity building and joint operations to combat drug trafficking via the rail network.
