India targets global silk leadership by 2028-29
During the 77th Foundation Day of the Central Silk Board in Bengaluru, Union Minister of Textiles Giriraj Singh announced the Indian government's goal to make India the world's top silk producer by 2028-29. National silk production has grown from 26,000 metric tonnes in 2014 to 42,000 metric tonnes currently, with a long-term target of reaching 60,000 metric tonnes by 2030-31.
To achieve these targets, the government aims to increase mulberry leaf yields and cocoon-rearing cycles, with the intention of raising annual farmer incomes to between ₹10 lakh and ₹12 lakh. The strategy includes integrating modern technologies such as AI, GIS, and Machine Learning for quality inspection, alongside the introduction of high-yielding silkworm hybrids and modern machinery.
Minister of State Shobha Karandlaje noted that Karnataka remains a leader in national silk production. The government is focusing on infrastructure, industrial growth, and MSME support to meet global export standards and reduce imports. Officials highlighted that international demand for Indian silk is increasing as production in China declines.
