India targets Rs 50,000 crore defense exports by 2028

India is projected to reach its defense export target of Rs 50,000 crore by 2028, approximately two years ahead of the government's original 2030 deadline. Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh announced that the country reached Rs 38,424 crore in annual defense exports during 2025-26, a significant increase from Rs 686 crore in 2013-14.

Singh identified cost competitiveness as a primary driver for growth, particularly in the missile segment. He noted that Indian-made missiles can be offered at nearly one-fourth the price of those from foreign original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). High demand has been observed for artillery, mounted gun systems, and the Akash surface-to-air missile system. The BrahMos missile remains a highly sought-after product, with sales processes underway for several Southeast Asian nations.

To support this growth, the government aims to expand domestic manufacturing capabilities. This includes establishing multiple fighter aircraft production lines, increasing the number of missile producers, and fostering hundreds of drone manufacturers. Additionally, the government is opening ammunition and propellant production to more private-sector companies to reduce reliance on single public-sector manufacturers.
