India targets self-reliance in oilseeds and pulses for Rabi season

At a recent agricultural conference in New Delhi, officials discussed preparations for the upcoming Rabi season with a primary focus on achieving self-reliance in oilseeds, pulses, and fertilizers.

Mangi Lal Jat, Director General of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, stated that the goal is to collaborate with states to develop action plans tailored to local conditions. This includes ensuring farmers have timely access to seeds, crops, and fertilizers. The conference also addressed sustainable, digital, and climate-resilient farming practices.

To manage costs and soil health, fertilizer use recommendations have been revised at the district level to promote balanced application. Jat noted that the recent crisis in West Asia has increased the government's fertilizer subsidy burden, making the efficient and judicious use of resources even more critical.
