India targets $1 trillion export goal for current fiscal year

India has set an ambitious target to reach $1 trillion in exports this fiscal year, representing a projected 16 percent increase from the $863 billion recorded in the previous year. Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal expressed confidence in achieving this goal based on first-half performance data, despite a global trade environment where growth is expected to be between 2.5 and 3 percent.

To support this objective, the government is emphasizing the utilization of Free Trade Agreements (FTAs). Goyal urged the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) to establish FTA utilization desks at state councils to help micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) navigate market access and rules of origin. India has recently finalized trade pacts with various regions, including the EFTA bloc, and aims to integrate more deeply into global value chains.

Key sectors expected to drive this growth include electronics, pharmaceuticals, engineering goods, automobiles, textiles, and digital services. Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agarwal noted that India’s participation in global value chains has risen to approximately 37-38 percent over the last decade, and continued expansion through strategic trade partnerships remains a priority.
