India Income Tax Return Deadline July 31, 2026 – Penalties and Filing Guidance

The Income Tax Department has set July 31, 2026 as the filing deadline for most individual taxpayers for FY 2025‑26 (assessment year 2026‑27). Salaried individuals, pensioners and HUFs filing ITR‑1 or ITR‑2 must file by that date; non‑audit business and professional returns (ITR‑3/ITR‑4) have an extended deadline of August 31, 2026, and audit cases must be submitted by October 31, 2026.

Late filing triggers a flat penalty under Section 234F: ₹1,000 for total income up to ₹5 lakh and ₹5,000 for income above that level. Additional consequences include 1 % per month interest on any unpaid tax (Section 234A), loss of loss‑carry‑forward benefits, and delayed tax refunds. The department cautions that no deadline extension is expected this year because the e‑filing portal and ITR forms were released on schedule.

Taxpayers are advised to file early to avoid portal congestion, to ensure all documents are ready (PAN, Aadhaar, Form‑16, Form 26AS, AIS, bank interest certificates, and any deduction‑related paperwork), and to complete e‑verification promptly. Interest certificates can be downloaded from bank portals such as ICICI, HDFC, and SBI, and must be retained for possible verification by the tax office.
