India telecom sector faces 6G rollout delays and AI expansion

The full-scale rollout of sixth-generation (6G) telecom networks in India may extend beyond the projected 2030 timeline. S P Kochhar, Director General of the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI), noted during the India Mobile Congress 2026 that uncertainty regarding revenue-generating applications could lead operators to be cautious about 6G investments. Kochhar highlighted that the lack of ‘killer applications’ in 5G makes the commercial viability of 6G a concern for investors.

Concurrently, Nokia is increasing its focus on developing next-generation telecom technologies within India. Vibha Mehra, Nokia's Country Manager, stated that the company is prioritizing R&D for core networks, autonomous networks, and AI-based solutions domestically. Nokia is also exploring ways to expand its manufacturing portfolio in India to align with government priorities and is ‘betting big on AI’ to drive future developments.
