India to block 1.58 crore inactive ration cards for PDS database cleanup
The Indian government is initiating a major cleanup of the Public Distribution System (PDS) database to eliminate fraud and ensure transparency. Starting October 1, 2026, more than 1.58 crore inactive ration cards will be temporarily blocked. This action targets cardholders who have not collected food grains for a period of six months, specifically from April to September 2026.
To prevent permanent loss of benefits, the government has provided a three-month grace period. During this time, affected beneficiaries can complete the mandatory eKYC and field verification processes to reactivate their cards. Once verification is successful, the supply of free and subsidized rations will resume without interruption.
The initiative aims to remove duplicate entries, deceased individuals, and ineligible persons from the system. Previous digital campaigns involving Aadhaar seeding and eKYC have already successfully removed approximately 5.8 crore fraudulent cards. The current effort is part of the updated Targeted Public Distribution System (TPDS) orders to ensure that government resources reach genuine, eligible beneficiaries.
