India to convert gas plant into major green ammonia facility

India is transitioning an existing natural gas-powered ammonia and urea plant into a renewable energy-powered facility. The project, led by AM Green Ammonia (India) Private Limited, aims to produce approximately 1.1 million tonnes of green ammonia annually, potentially making it one of the largest renewable-powered production plants in the world.

The conversion is supported by a US$100 million loan from the Leading Asia’s Private Infrastructure Fund 2, which is financed by the Japan International Cooperation Agency and administered by the Asian Development Bank (ADB). This marks the first investment under the Action for Creating Energy Security for Long-term Resilience (ACCEL) initiative, a joint program by the ADB and Japan launched in May 2026 to assist Asia-Pacific nations in managing energy costs and diversifying sustainable energy systems.

Green ammonia serves as a lower-emission alternative to conventional ammonia used in fertilizer manufacturing and other industrial processes. The initiative aligns with India’s broader National Green Hydrogen Mission (NGHM), which includes the Strategic Interventions for Green Hydrogen Transition (SIGHT) programme. The NGHM has an initial outlay of ₹19,744 crore through FY 2029-30, with significant portions allocated to domestic electrolyser manufacturing and green-hydrogen production.
