India to enforce SIM-binding rules for messaging apps from 2027
The Indian Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is set to implement new SIM-binding requirements for messaging platforms, including WhatsApp, Telegram, and Signal, effective January 1, 2027. Under these regulations, messaging accounts must be continuously linked to an active SIM card or eSIM associated with the registered mobile number.
Platforms have until December 31, 2026, to comply with the mandate. The rule aims to combat cybercrime, phishing, and financial fraud by preventing criminals from using Indian mobile numbers to operate accounts from outside the country. Currently, users can often continue using messaging services via Wi-Fi even after removing the registered SIM card; however, the new framework may suspend access if the associated SIM is removed, deactivated, or replaced.
The move specifically targets the misuse of verified accounts for scams such as “digital arrests” and organized fraud. While major platforms like WhatsApp and Telegram are expected to comply, reports indicate that Snapchat may be exempt from these specific SIM-binding requirements.
