India to fast-track critical mineral recycling reforms

Union Coal and Mines Minister G Kishan Reddy has pledged to fast-track reforms within India's recycling sector to establish a robust critical mineral recycling ecosystem. Speaking at a seminar hosted by the Material Recycling Association of India, Reddy addressed industry concerns regarding scrap import frameworks, aluminium scrap duties, and the Extended Producer Responsibility regime.

The government aims to advance circular economy goals and reduce dependence on primary mining and imports. To support this, the government is preparing an incentive scheme for critical mineral recycling and has allocated approximately Rs 34,000 crore for critical mineral development initiatives. Additionally, the government proposes establishing Centres of Excellence through IITs and other technical institutions to advance recovery and processing technologies.
