India prepares for 80th Independence Day with historic Red Fort ceremony

India is preparing for its 80th Independence Day on August 15, 2026. The national ceremony at the Red Fort in New Delhi will feature several historic firsts, most notably the singing of the national song, ‘Vande Mataram’, from the ramparts to commemorate its 150th anniversary. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will hoist the national flag and deliver an address to the nation.

The celebrations will center on two primary themes: ‘150 Years of Vande Mataram’ and ‘Yuva Shakti for Viksit Bharat@2047’, which emphasizes the role of youth in achieving a developed India by 2047. To reflect this, approximately 5,000 special guests have been invited, including youth innovators, startup founders, and 19 medal-winning students from international science Olympiads.

Nationwide, the ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ campaign is encouraging citizens to hoist the national flag at their homes. In Odisha, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi will lead the state-level celebrations in Bhubaneswar, with various ministers assigned to lead ceremonies across different districts. Security remains high across the country, with authorities on alert to ensure the safety of the national festivities.
