India to implement stricter birth and death registration rules on October 1

New regulations for the delayed registration of births and deaths in India will take effect on October 1, 2026. The Registration of Births and Deaths (Amendment) Act, 2026, aims to encourage more timely reporting of these vital events by making the approval process for late registrations more stringent.

Under the new law, applications for registration filed between one and two years after a birth or death will require an order from a District Magistrate, Sub-Divisional Magistrate, or an authorized executive magistrate. These officials must verify the accuracy of the event before registration can proceed.

For reports made more than two years after the event, the law introduces a higher level of judicial scrutiny, mandating an order from a judicial magistrate of the first class. The amendment follows the passage of the bill by both Houses of Parliament and subsequent presidential assent.
