India to launch free online coaching for competitive exams
Following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Independence Day announcement, the Indian government is planning to launch a free online coaching program to alleviate the financial burden on families preparing for competitive examinations. The initiative aims to utilize digital public infrastructure to provide access to quality teachers and study materials for high-stakes exams such as NEET and JEE, with potential expansion to other public recruitment tests.
Reports suggest the program could begin on October 2. Experts suggest that a robust digital platform, similar to IIT Kanpur’s SATHEE model, could be effective in delivering curated content and mentoring. While the move aims to reduce inequality for talented students in rural or low-income areas, some analysts note that the heavy reliance on private coaching highlights systemic weaknesses in the formal schooling and college education systems.
