Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar faces cabinet portfolio disputes and urban‑mobility push
Karnataka’s Congress‑led government is grappling with several political challenges. A cabinet expansion on August 3 added 19 ministers but left many without portfolios, sparking infighting among legislators. Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar travelled to New Delhi to meet the Congress high command, seeking its help to resolve the portfolio‑allocation dispute. He also met senior party leaders Siddaramaiah and T.B. Jayachandra before the Monsoon Session of the state legislature.
The chief minister announced that a woman will be included in the cabinet, responding to calls for greater gender representation. He also reaffirmed the state’s commitment to a socio‑economic survey and a caste census aimed at reducing social inequities.
Separately, the government formed the Urban Mobility Mission Committee for Bengaluru, chaired by Home Minister Priyank Kharge. The committee brings together government agencies, private mobility firms such as Uber, Ola, Swiggy and Zomato, and academic experts to devise an integrated, technology‑driven solution to the city’s traffic congestion.
In the electoral arena, the Karnataka Election Commission’s special intensive revision (SIR) placed over 1.1 million voters (about 20 % of the state’s electorate) in the EDDSO category. Congress leader B.K. Hariprasad wrote to the chief electoral officer requesting a 15‑day extension to allow affected voters to correct their records. Legislative Council speaker Basavaraj Horatti announced his resignation, accusing opponents of politicising the move.
