India to publish new airline fare regulation rules within two weeks

The Indian government has finalized rules to regulate airfares and additional charges imposed by airlines. During a Supreme Court hearing, the Centre assured the court that these rules have received administrative approval and will be published within two weeks.

The legal proceedings stem from a public interest litigation challenging what are described as “opaque, exploitative and algorithm-driven” pricing practices in the civil aviation sector. The petition also highlights concerns regarding the reduction of complimentary check-in baggage allowances.

The Supreme Court has previously noted the need for “rationalisation” in airfares, specifically addressing sharp price fluctuations during festive seasons and peak travel periods. The new regulations are being framed under the Bharatiya Vayuyan Adhiniyam, 2024, to address surge pricing and excess baggage charges.
