Meta faces Indian parliamentary ultimatum over Modi video removal
Prime Minister Narendra Modi posted a video on Facebook on 23 July 2026 that was temporarily removed for about five to six hours after an AI‑driven moderation error flagged the content. The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Communications and Information Technology, chaired by BJP MP Nishikant Dubey, issued a three‑day ultimatum to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg to apologise for the takedown. The panel warned that failure to comply could lead to the loss of Meta’s safe‑harbour protection under Section 79 of the Indian Information Technology Act.
Meta’s Chief Global Affairs Officer Joel Kaplan was summoned to meet Indian officials on 5‑6 August to discuss the incident and broader concerns, including the handling of child sexual‑abuse material (CSAM), algorithmic bias, synthetic content and the proposed WhatsApp username feature. The National Human Rights Commission has also issued notices to the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, state police and Meta to investigate alleged CSAM on Instagram and Facebook. Meta has apologized, attributing the removal to a technical glitch, but the Indian government finds the explanation insufficient and seeks stronger safeguards.
The series of meetings and the parliamentary demand reflect escalating regulatory scrutiny of global tech platforms in India, with potential legal and financial consequences for Meta if the safe‑harbour protection is withdrawn.
