India to upgrade 300 Krishi Vigyan Kendras by 2027

The Indian central government has established a March 2027 deadline to upgrade the infrastructure and logistics of 300 priority Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) across the country. During a review meeting in New Delhi, Union Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan called for increased financial support and participation from state governments to meet these targets.

In addition to infrastructure upgrades, the government plans to establish Incubation-cum-Skill Centres in every KVK by December 2028. These centres aim to strengthen innovation, entrepreneurship, and skill development by mapping KVKs to technical partner institutions and agro-based enterprises.

The initiative also addresses long-standing human resource and financial management challenges. The government is pushing for states to fill vacant posts and ensure timely fund releases, as well as providing contributions to the National Pension System and retirement benefits for KVK staff. These efforts follow recommendations from a 2013 High Power Committee that highlighted gaps in recruitment and staff stability within the KVK network.
