India to use nuclear power for AI and data centre growth

Union Minister Jitendra Singh has announced that India’s nuclear energy programme will play a critical role in meeting the rising electricity demands driven by artificial intelligence (AI) and data centres. Speaking at the Bloomberg Economy Forum 2026, Singh emphasized that nuclear power will provide the continuous and reliable electricity supply necessary to support expanding computing capacity and digital services.

India aims to reach 100 gigawatts (GW) of nuclear power capacity by 2047 as part of its broader strategy to achieve net-zero emissions by 2070. The minister noted that nuclear energy will complement other energy sources to support long-term economic growth and technological expansion.

Regarding the deployment of AI, Singh described it as a tool for various sectors, including space, life sciences, and scientific research, while stressing that human judgment must remain central to its use.
