India tourism experiences spark debate over progress and treatment of foreigners

Conflicting experiences from foreign residents and travelers in India have sparked online debate regarding the country’s modern infrastructure and treatment of tourists.

A resident of Mumbai, originally from Amsterdam, gained social media attention for defending India against claims of being “backward.” Highlighting the country’s rapid progress and digital convenience, she cited the ability to receive services, such as flower deliveries, within minutes as evidence of advancement.

In contrast, a European solo traveler reported feeling “dehumanised” after a month-long trip. The traveler claimed to have faced a “foreigner tax,” where repeated price negotiations and being treated as a “walking ATM” led to mental and financial exhaustion. He noted that these experiences were particularly prevalent in smaller and medium-sized cities.
