India transgender law amendment creates healthcare uncertainty
A recent amendment to India’s transgender law has created significant uncertainty for patients and medical professionals. The legislative changes introduce penalties for forcing individuals to assume a transgender identity through chemical, hormonal, or surgical procedures. While the government maintains that the amendment is intended to prevent exploitation and trafficking and does not criminalize consensual, medically supervised care, activists and healthcare providers report widespread hesitation.
Medical practitioners face a dilemma between their professional duty to provide care and the potential legal risks posed by the new regulations. Some clinics have reportedly halted treatments, leading patients to seek ways to self-medicate. Rights activists warn that the lack of legal clarity may discourage qualified doctors from providing essential services to the transgender community.
