India ultra-high-income taxpayers rise 39% to 576 in AY26

India has seen a significant rise in ultra-high-income taxpayers, according to an SBI Research report citing Income Tax Department data. For the 2026 assessment year (AY26), the number of individuals reporting an annual income of Rs 100 crore or more rose by 39 percent to 576, up from 415 in AY25.

The growth in the ultra-high-income bracket has been volatile but substantial; the number of taxpayers in this category has quadrupled since AY22, when there were only 142.

Similarly, the broader high-income segment—taxpayers reporting Rs 1 crore or more—grew by 14 percent to reach 5,35,672 in AY26, compared to 4,71,419 in AY25. This group has more than doubled since AY22. Analysts suggest these trends reflect increasing economic activity, business expansion, and the formalization of high-value earnings within India’s tax system.
