India urges developed nations to lead emission cuts amid Nepal flood crisis

India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has stated that developed nations must take the lead in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and providing support to developing countries. This stance was reiterated by MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal in response to comments from Nepalese Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal regarding the need for a diplomatic shift from receiving aid to seeking justice and compensation for climate-related disasters.

The call for action follows devastating floods in Nepal, which have resulted in 1,294 confirmed deaths and left 5,053 people missing. Jaiswal emphasized that climate action should be based on the principle of “common but differentiated responsibilities and respective capabilities,” noting that historically high-emitting developed nations should provide finance and technology transfers to assist developing nations.

India has expressed solidarity with Nepal, providing assistance for rescue, relief, reconstruction, and recovery efforts. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has communicated directly with Nepal’s leadership to convey that India stands “shoulder to shoulder” with the country during this crisis.
