India urges Global South to become ‘rule shapers’ at G77 meeting

At the 50th annual meeting of the Group of 77 (G77) foreign ministers held on the sidelines of the 81st UN General Assembly in New York, Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri advocated for the strengthening of the Global South's role in global governance.

Addressing the theme “Global South and the Future of Multilateralism,” Misri emphasized the necessity of development-oriented and people-centric multilateralism. He called for collective efforts to transition the Global South from being ‘rule takers’ to ‘rule shapers.’

Misri also highlighted the urgent need for reforms within the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to ensure better representation and a stronger voice for developing nations. The G77, a major intergovernmental coalition of developing nations, currently includes 134 member states.
