India urges UN Security Council to halt Hormuz attacks and address Gaza humanitarian crisis

India’s permanent representative at the United Nations Security Council condemned recent attacks on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, calling for an immediate end to the violence. The statement highlighted that the incidents resulted in the death of an Indian citizen, several Indian injuries and one missing person, and underscored the strategic importance of safe maritime navigation for India’s roughly $180 billion annual trade with the Gulf region and the welfare of about ten million Indians living and working there.

The Indian delegation also urged the council to focus on the humanitarian emergency in Gaza, reaffirming support for a two‑state solution and noting that New Delhi has already provided about $175 million in development and humanitarian assistance. By linking maritime security, economic interests and the Gaza crisis, India called for diplomatic engagement and the rapid de‑escalation of regional tensions.
